M-PESA has become a financial lifeline for millions of Kenyans. Beyond sending and receiving money, it offers instant mobile loans that are fast, convenient, and accessible. The following are the loans: M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, Fuliza, Taasi, Fuliza Biashara, and Fanikiwa. The big question is, "Which M-PESA loan is the cheapest?"
Below is a break down for each option, their costs, and which one gives you the best deal.
1. M-Shwari Loan
M-Shwari is a savings and loan service provided in partnership with NCBA Bank. Loan limits typically range from KSh 1,000 to KSh 50,000, depending on your M-PESA usage and repayment history.
Cost: 7.5% facility fee + 1.5% excise duty (about 9% total)
Repayment: 30 days
Verdict: It is reliable, accessible, and one of the cheapest mainstream M-PESA loans.
2. KCB M-PESA Loan
This service, offered with KCB Bank, works almost the same way as M-Shwari but allows higher borrowing limits—up to KSh 1 million.
Cost: is around 8.9% interest + excise duty
* It has a repayment of 30 days.
Verdict: Slightly more expensive than M-Shwari but offers larger loan limits.
3. Fuliza (M-PESA Overdraft)
Fuliza is not a loan but an overdraft that lets you complete transactions when your balance is low. It’s convenient but costly if you don’t clear it quickly.
Cost: 1% access fee + 20% excise duty on the fee + daily maintenance charges
Repayment: Flexible, but fees accumulate daily
Verdict: Extremely expensive if not cleared within a day or two. Best for emergencies only.
4. Business Loan Options (Taasi Pochi & Fuliza Biashara)
Safaricom has also rolled out products tailored for business users:
Taasi Pochi: offers Loans between KSh 1,000 and KSh 150,000 with rates range from 3.85% (7 days) to 6.41% (30 days).
Fuliza Biashara is an overdraft for M-PESA tills, charged at 2% access fee plus daily fees.
Verdict: Taasi can be cost-effective for short-term borrowing, but Fuliza Biashara is relatively expensive if held for long.
5. M-PESA Fanikiwa Loan (Pilot)
Fanikiwa is Safaricom’s newest loan product, still in pilot with select users. It’s designed to be cheaper and more transparent.
Cost: 5% interest for 30 days
Limits: KSh 100 to KSh 10,000
Repayment is 30 days.
Verdict: The cheapest M-PESA loan so far, but currently limited to selected customers.
Which M-PESA Loan Is the Cheapest?
Fanikiwa Loan (if available) is 5% flat, making it the cheapest.
M-Shwari Loan is 9% total cost , the most affordable mainstream option.
KCB M-PESA Loan is slightly higher than M-Shwari but offers bigger limits.
Taasi Pochi Loan is competitive for short-term business borrowing.
Fuliza & Fuliza Biashara are the most expensive; should only be used for emergencies or very short-term cash flow gaps.
Conclusion
When it comes to Safaricom M-PESA loans, M-Shwari remains the most affordable for the average Kenyan user, while Fanikiwa is the cheapest overall if you are lucky enough to be part of the pilot.
Having said that, always borrow responsibly. These loans are designed for short-term needs, and failing to repay on time not only makes them expensive but can also affect your future access to credit.
